The National Council of Citizen Communicators Honor Brad Will in Mexico

On September 30th, 2008, in Mexico City,The National Council of Citizen Communicators (known for its Spanish initials CONACC) presented an award in the name of Brad Will. Nick Cooper of Friends of Brad Will attended the ceremony to accept the award in Brad’s name.

CONACC was founded on September 17, 2006 at the Journalists Club of Mexico, a day after the formal establishment of the Democratic National Convention. Initially the founding states were the Federal District and Durango with the later they were joined Sonora, Baja California, Yucatan, the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Nuevo León, Guerrero, the United States, Venezuela, Cuba, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Panama.

CONACC celebrated its second anniversary with the Ricardo Flores Magon award to reporters and “citizen communicators” for achievements in journalism, ethics, and commitment to the community. Other recipients included families, friends and suporters of those killed in the the 2006 police attack in Atenco, and families of those killed in the March cross-border raid by Colombian troops of a FARC encampment in Ecuador.

Nick’s presentation in Spanish (English below): Es un gran privilegio el recibir este honor aquí, además es un privilegio mio que tengo suficientes recursos economicos-, y el apoyo de mucha gente para poder venir. Mil gracias a Robert, Lee, Hardy, Christine, Selina, Massoud, Dorinda, Julita, Patricia, Richard, Luis, Magdalena, y Alexander por la ayuda que me han dado. El privilegio desempeña un gran papel en la vida de gente como Brad Will y yo mismo, quienes tenemos suficiente para viajar, tener equipo, de llegar a un lugar, participar, aprender, hacer periodismo, y al final regresar a casa. Sin embargo, en octubre de 2006, Brad no fue capaz de salir de Oaxaca vivo y regresar a casa.

Brad Will murió apoyando a la gente de Oaxaca, puso su vida en peligro como siempre lo había hecho en varias ocasiones a favor de la vida en la tierra, en una lucha contra la tortura, la guerra, la dominación, y la corrupción que ha continuado por miles de años. El gobierno está tratando de culpar a los miembros de la APPO con quienes Brad trabajó en solidaridad. Las fuerzas del gobernador Ulises Ruiz déspota siguen impunes, mientras aquellos que arriesgaron sus vidas llevando el cuerpo de Brad al hospital durante una lluvia de balas se tendrán que defender a si mismos contra las acusaciones y cargos falsos.

Brad fue un adherente de la Otra Campaña y del movimiento Zapatista como yo. No creémos que ONGs como Amnistía ni la Oficina de Washington para América Latina, ni los partidos como los republicanos, los demócratas, el PAN, PRI nisiquiera el PRD podrían resolver los problemas, ni es su interés tampoco el resolverlos. Pero cuando la gente se va, los líderes les siguen. Brad fue una parte de otro tipo de movimiento popular que se observó en sus últimos días y que discutió en su ultimo comunicado, “la muerte en Oaxaca: la luz de alba, día dieciséis de octubre, dos mil seis: que se puede decir sobre este movimiento, este movimiento revolucionario, reconoces que se va forjando, creciendo, construyendo— lo puedes sentir—intentando urgentemente por una democracia directa… esta claro que esto es mas que una huelga, mas que una expulsión de un gobernador, mas que un bloqueo, mas que una coalición de fragmentos, es una verdadera revuelta del pueblo, y después de décadas de dominio bajo del PRI con nsolo el soborno, el fraude, y la bala, la gente ya esta harta—le nombran a el, el Tirano— hablan de demoler su autoritarismo, no puedes confundir los susurros de la Selva Lacandona en las calles; en cada rinconcito de la calle, van decidiendo el mantenerse juntos, se les ve en las caras, indígenas, mujeres, niños, tan valientes, vigilantes por la noche, dignos y resueltos…”

Estoy aquí para representar la comunidad de Los Amigos de Brad Will, en demanda del fin del plan Méjico, o la Iniciativa Mérida. La guerra contra las drogas no es solo un fracaso, sino un engaño. La prohibición no sirve para nada. El dinero gastado en la venta de drogas y en la lucha falsa contra las drogas es lo mismo. Las armas usadas para vender drogas y en la lucha imposible contra la venta de las drogas son las mismas. Los grupos armados que van vendiendo y peleando contra las drogas son indistinguibles. Como en la mayoría de las guerras, hay ganadores en ambos lados beneficiandose de esta guerra, y hay perdedores en ambos lados, los pobres, los caminantes, y el pueblo esclavizado por las economías que controlan este sistema de guerra.

Las fuerzas de Ulises Ruiz explotaron el nombre de Brad para justificar una escalación militar, y continuar con cargos falsos contra la APPO y la CIPO. Estoy aquí—aprovechando el nombre de Brad para justificar mi viaje, para justificar el conocerlos, y el jueves voy a marchar con ustedes en apoyo de los estudiantes de Tlatelolco en su nombre. Ojalá que no esté abusando del nombre de mi amigo Brad y yo pueda hacer las cosas como el las hubiera deseado. La ultima vez que vi a Brad fue cuando fuimos a campar en el bosque en el verano del dos mil seis, meses antes de que muriera….. Ninguno de nosotros habíamos llevado casas de campaña pero encontramos espacio en una que estaba desocupada. Cuando uso el nombre de Brad para hacer algo, trato de imaginar lo que el me hubiera pedido, si el hubiera sabido que nunca nos volveríamos a ver, y si el hubiera sabido que algún día iba yo estar hablando de su parte. Nosotros, Los Amigos de Brad Will, nos quedamos para adivinar, decidir, y tratar de tomar las acciones que Brad hubiera querido en su nombre.

It is a privilege to be honored here, but it is also privilege of mine to have the money, and the support of others to come here. My thanks to a Robert, Lee, Hardy, Christine, Selina, Massoud, Dorinda, Julita, Patricia, Richard, Luis, Magdalena, and Alexander for their help. Privilege is an important part of the picture for people like Brad Will and myself who have money to travel, to have equipment, to arrive somewhere, participate, learn, do journalism, and then leave and go home. But in October of 2006, Brad didn’t get to leave Oaxaca alive and go home.

Brad Will died to support the people of Oaxaca, risking his life as he had many times to support life on Earth, in a battle against torture, war, domination and corruption that has been going on for thousands of years. The government is trying to blame the members of the APPO Brad worked to support. The forces of the despotic governor Ulises Ruiz enjoy impunity, while those who risked their lives trying to carry Brad’s body to a hospital during a rain of bullets have to defend themselves from outrageous charges.

Brad was an adherent of the Otra Campana and the supporter of the Zapatista movement as am I. We do not believe that ONGs like Amnesty and The Washington Office on Latin America, nor political parties like the Republicans, Democrats, PRI, PAN, or even the PRD can fix problems, nor that they will even try to do so. Brad was part of a different kind of mass movement that he observed in his last days and talked about in his last communiqué, “Death in Oaxaca: early dawn, oct16, 2006: what can you say about this movement — this revolutionary moment — you know it is building, growing, shaping — you can feel it — trying desperately for a direct democracy… it is clear that this is more than a strike, more than expulsion of a governor, more than a blockade, more than a coalition of fragments — it is a genuine peoples revolt — and after decades of pri rule by bribe, fraud, and bullet the people are tired — they call him the tyrant — they talk of destroying this authoritarianism — you cannot mistake the whisper of the lancandon jungle in the streets — in every street corner deciding together to hold — you see it their faces — indigenous, women, children — so brave — watchful at night — proud and resolute”

I am here to represent the community of Friends of Brad will in demanding an end to Plan Mexico, or the Merida Initiative. The war on drugs is not only a failure, but a fraud. Prohibition does not work. The money spent on selling drugs and the pretend fight against drugs is the same. The weapons used to sell drugs and the impossible fight against selling drugs are the same. The armed groups selling and fighting against drugs are indistinguishable. As with most wars, there are winners on both sides profiting from the fighting, and there are losers all around, the poor, the passers-by, the people enslaved by the economies.

The forces of Ulises Ruiz exploited Brad’s name to justify an escalation, and continued false charges against the APPO and CIPO. I am also here using Brad’s name — to justify traveling here, justify meeting you, and on Thursday I will march with you in support of the students of Tlatelolco in his name. I hope that I don’t take advantage of my friend Brad’s name and that I can find some way to do the things he would have. The last time I saw Brad was camping in the woods in the summer of 2006, a few months before his death. Neither of us had brought tents but we found room together in a tent that wasn’t being used. When I use Brad’s name to do something, I try to imagine what he would have asked of me had he known we wouldn’t see each other again and that some day I would speak on his behalf. We, the Friends of Brad Will have been left to guess, to decide, to try to take the actions Brad would have wanted in his name.
