This exhibit is made up of woodblock prints and stencils made by ASAR-O
(Oaxacan Assembly of Revolutionary Artists), a collective involved in
the
popular movement APPO in Oaxaca, Mexico. ASAR-O formed in October of
2006,
respinding to the call of the APPO (Popular Assembly of the People of
Oaxaca) a diverse movement of civil society in Southern Mexico. With the
goal that “all sectors will organize themselves to resist and unite
in the
struggle against the tyranny of a government that represents the
interests
of the wealthy…”

Come out to see an exciting glimpse of the work that has been
produced for
“mega-marches” and painting on the walls of Oaxaca City. Its an
inspiring
body of work that makes the demands of the movement visually.

OAXACA TV PROGRAM AND DISCUSSION

Greetings,

Mi name is Maricruz Badia, I am the outreach coordinator for HITN, the channel that educates and entertains, the first national public television network for Latinos in the United States. I am writing because on Thursday April 19 at 9 PM Eastern Time, we will broadcast a new edition of our production Latinoamerica Hoy about the current social movement in Oaxaca.

This Latinoamerica Hoy program will present the premier in Spanish of the documentary “Land, Rain and Fire: Report from Oaxaca” produced by social independent filmmaker Tami Gold and Gerardo Renique professor and writer of Latin American History. Following the documentary journalist Juan Carlos Fernández will moderate a live discussion on the current status of the social movement in Oaxaca with Gold, Renique and a journalist from that region in Mexico. The viewers will be able to call in and send emails during the discussion. We will also present “El Golpe” a 12 minute video that gives an update of the current struggle in Oaxaca.

We want to work with communities who are supportive of the movement in Oaxaca to make sure that as many people as possible tune in and participate in the program.

For this reason, my department is seeking to collaborate with groups or individuals interested in this topic to coordinate gatherings the day of the broadcast in centers, churches or homes around the US.

Family members, consisting of Brad’s parents and his brother and sister, will visit Mexico City and Oaxaca City. They will meet with human rights and other non-governmental organizations, Mexican officials, the United States Embassy, eyewitnesses, and the media. Press conferences will be held in each city.

Brad Will was shot and killed in Santa Lucia del Camino on October 27, 2006. Brad had been covering the then 4-month long conflict between the state government and a coalition of organizations and unions pulled together in the Oaxaca People’s Popular Assembly (APPO) to protest Governor Ulises Ruiz’s use of excessive force against the Section 22 of the National Union of Education Workers on June 14, 2006.

Beginning in August, armed para-police units linked to both local and state police forces began opening fire on protesters. By October 27, para-police units had killed at least 10 protesters. During this time federal and state prosecutors did not open investigations into these crimes. On October 27, members of the Santa Lucia del Camino police and local government officials were photographed shooting at APPO protesters where Brad was shot. The national press published these photographs. However, state and federal prosecutors have declined to investigate possible government involvement in Brad’s murder, instead pursuing a speculative theory that members of APPO murdered Brad.

Family members are traveling to Mexico to demand a new rigorous and impartial investigation of Brad’s murder. “The cycle of impunity related to crimes against journalists and human rights violations in Mexico must end,” said Craig Will, Brad’s older brother. “It is our hope that this upcoming visit will increase the spotlight on the inadequacies of the Mexican judicial system and
encourage responsible leadership on the part of the state and federal governments to pursue real justice.”

Anyone! But it’d be great to have some folks with experience with stencil
making, prop making, etc to be on hand to help folks without experience.

We’ll be making visuals that can be used in the Dec 22 actions and the
ongoing vigils at the U.N.

NEEDS:
If you can get any of the following, please bring

cardboard (1, 2 and 3 ply – the bigger the better, and ideally with as
few creases as possible – refridgerator boxes are the best)

tape (duct, masking, packing.. anything with durability and strength)

box cutters and scissors

markers and sharpies (the larger the better and in multiple colours)

string and rope

fabric (by the roll ideally – there are many places in the city (canal st.
for example) where rolls of fabric can be purchased at a reasonable price

paint (spray paint, house paint, artist paint – primary colors + black and
white are best but everything helps)

glue ( white glue, glue stick, hot glue)

staplers w/ staples

paper (large sheets and by the roll)

mylar (the best possible material for making stencils can be purchase at
art supply stores)

wood (1 inch x 2 inch x 8 foot pieces come in bundles of 12 can be
purchased at any wood supply store

cardboard tubes (often times these can be found in dumpsters outside of
clothing manufactures)

screws (1 inch, 1.5 inch 2 inch, 2.5 inch coarse threaded drywall screws)
